If James Olsen’s (Mehcad Brooks) life wasn’t complicated enough, he’ll have a sister to deal with soon.
Deadline reports Azie Tesfai has joined the show as Kelly Olsen, the CatCo CEO’s sibling. Described as “an intelligent and insightful woman who spent time in the military in order to pay for medical school,” the character is near completing her training as a psychiatrist. According to the character description, “she’s got a large heart and cares deeply about others.” Presumably that empathy will bring her to National City, though its always possible her relationship with James is more cantankerous.
The addition of family is the latest in shifting storylines for Superman’s Pal. Originally conceived as a love interest for Kara (Melissa Benoist), the romantic subplot was abandoned in the Season 2 premiere. The character soon became a superhero known as the Guardian. In Season 3, he continued to appear as Guardian, but also began a new romance with Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath). He was also exposed as Guardian toward the end of the season. In the Season 4 premiere, Lena cooked things so he will not face prosecution for this hero activities — but he will be arrested and tried should he appear as the Guardian ever again.
James’s shifting fortunes have always reflected a certain lack of vision for the character. Indeed, love interests on the CW superhero shows often have a hard time defining themselves. The only time James felt vital as a character was when he was partnered with Winn (Jeremy Jordan) during his Season 2 Guardian exploits. But with Jordan away from the show, James is once again grasping for story. Maybe the appearance of his sister will do him well.
Supergirl airs Sundays on The CW.
