With the atmosphere seeded with Kryptonite and the particulars of Agent Liberty (Sam Witwer) revealed, life for Kara (Melissa Benoist) may be about to get a lot harder. But if this preview of next week’s Supergirl is any indication, her confinement in the suit Lena (Kate McGrath) made for her may be surprisingly brief.
Then again, the lack of suit footage may be hiding more plot than is typical for a Supergirl preview. At the same time, the hopeful tone suggests the Agent Liberty story may be taking a short pause soon.
That said, this week’s deep dive into how previous events on the show turned a liberal-leaning humanities professor into a radicalized terrorist is strange ground for the show. As I keep saying, setting up a villain like this creates an impossible task for Kara. She cannot end xenophobia and as long as events go bad for folks on the ground, someone will always be swayed to this sort of hate. And that person will always be co-opted by someone like Mercy Graves (Rhona Mitra) to serve an agenda they do not understand. As we learned this week, the anti-alien sentiment is more a means to an end for Mercy, who is herself working for someone else.
And, perhaps, she’ll learn that stoking the flames with Agent Liberty can lead to a fire she cannot hope to contain. But then I suppose Lex will use the fire for his own ends when he arrives later this year.
