Virginia Madsen is going from Candymen and Connecticut hauntings to DC Universe’s Louisiana.
DC Universe announced Thursday that the actor will be part of the cast of their upcoming Swamp Thing series. She will play Maria Sunderland, a new character created specifically for the show though her last name will be familiar to long-time readers of Swamp Thing. Described as a child of privilege who gave it all up to marry Marais area business magnate Avery Sunderland, Maria now finds her husband’s obsession with the nearby swamps is putting a significant strain on their marriage. Additionally, the return of Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed) to Houma reawakens a deep grief over the loss of her daughter; which leads her to the very same swamps consuming Avery.
Avery Sunderland made a memorable appearance — and disappearance — at the beginning of Alan Moore’s run on Swamp Things as the CEO of a company interested in dissecting Swamp Thing and profiting from any scientific discoveries made from studying him. The character will presumably appear in the series, but no casting decision has been announced.
Besides Madsen and Reed, the series will also feature Jeryl Prescot as DC Comics’ favorite fortune teller Madame Xanadu, Maria Sten as Liz Tremayne — a tabloid journalist from an early issue of Swamp Thing re-imagined as Abby’s best friend — Jennifer Beals as Sheriff Lucilia Cable and Derek Mears as Swamp Thing.
Swamp Thing will premiere on DC Universe in 2019.
