Two Magical Fantasy Series Coming In November From Viz Media

by Gary Catig

Viz Media consistently finds great manga to release stateside and their upcoming November releases are no exception. They have two fantasy-based series involving magic set to come out in a few weeks. They are Record of Gancrest War and Ran and the Gray World.

Record of Gancrest War is the first of the two to be available, arriving November 13. The riveting fantasy adventure is created by Ryo Mizuno and features stories and artwork from Makoto Yotsuba with designs by Miyuu. The protagonist, Siluca Meletes, is a young mage who wants to rise above the petty squabbles of the nobility and bring justice to her land. During an important wedding between two of the most influential factions, tragedy strikes forcing her to rebel against the world order to achieve peace. Alongside Theo, a knight, the pair set out to bring change to their homeland. It should be noted this is a mature title.

Editor, David Brothers, says:

RECORD OF GRANCREST WAR is conceived by the visionary creator Ryo Mizuno, who drew wide acclaim for his earlier work of fantasy adventure Record of Lodoss War, which was a gateway title for scores of anime fans around the world, including myself. Siluca and Theo have a really fascinating dynamic together, and a reckless but efficient approach to reforming a land ruled by war and burdened by Chaos.

One week later, on November 20th, Ran and the Gray World hits stores. Ran Uruma longs for the day she becomes an adult so she can follow in her mother’s footsteps and be a powerful sorceress. Unwilling to wait, she dons magical sneakers to grow older and sets off on her own adventures despite her dad and older brother’s best efforts. The series is written and illustrated by Aki Irie.

Editor, Amy Yu, says:

RAN AND THE GRAY WORLD will make a lasting impression on readers with its lush artwork and intriguing story. I love the gorgeous details and all the fun characters—it’s actually my new favorite series right now, and it has many fans at VIZ as well! We hope manga and graphic novel fans will find this series as charming as we do.
