2019 is the 80th anniversary of Marvel Comics and the publisher is getting ready to celebrate in style. They’ve already announced special collections highlighting each decade they’ve been in business. Now they’ve announced a handful of one-shots featuring characters from the early days including Ziggy Pig and Silly Seal.
Ziggy Pig and Silly Seal are two cartoon animal characters that haven’t been seen in comics in about 50 years. They’re getting a one-shot from Frank Tieri and Jacob Chabot featuring an all-new adventure. It will also feature a cover by Nic Klein. This is due out on February 27th, 2019.
Marvel is also releasing a western called The Gunhawks from David & Maria Lapham and Luca Pizzari. This is due out on February 6th with a cover by Gerardo Zaffino. Rounding out the trilogy is Love Romances, featuring “love stories that can only be told in a comic book.” This looks to be an anthology with work from Dennis Hopeless, Gail Simone, Jon Adams, Annapaola Martello, Roge Antonio, and more. It’s scheduled for release on February 20th with a cover by Pyeong-Jun Park.
I understand what Marvel is trying to do here but it feels really forced. These are areas that no one’s really touched for decades and there’s probably a reason for that. I could be totally wrong, however, and we could be heading into a new age of Ziggy Pig and Silly Seal.
