Archie Bongiovanni’s Grease Bats Gets Collected By Boom! Studios

by James Ferguson

Boom! Studios has announced Grease Bats, a new original graphic novel from Archie Bongiovanni. Coming in July 2019, this will be an over-sized collection of Bongiovanni’s webcomic of the same name, previously seen on the Autostraddle Saturday Morning Cartoons series, along with brand new stories exclusive to this volume.

Grease Bats follows the daily adventures of two best friends. There’s Andy, a trans genderqueer individual who’s equal parts tough and loving, and their BFF Scout, a mistake-maker who runs on all-feelings-all-the-time. They navigate friendships, roommates, and romances within their community. Their journeys include everything from sexcapades gone wrong to the meaning of tarot and the realities of finding your place within queer spaces.

Creator Archie Bongiovanni says:

When I created Grease Bats, I sought to draw what the possibilities of radical friendship can look like. I wanted to draw a comic that reflected the nuances of who my community was — of who I am. My characters are flawed, diverse, weird, and living in a world where there isn’t one way to be, act, look, date, or handle the complicated situation of going to a party where all your exes are.

Grease Bats will be published under Boom! Studios’ Boom! Box imprint, alongside titles like Lumberjanes, Giant Days, and The Backstagers.

Shannon Watters, Editor at Boom! Studios adds:

Grease Bats is rooted in emotional honesty and a very real portrayal of some of the ins and outs of being queer. And Archie is such a dynamic and hilarious cartoonist that it’s hard not to identify with Andy and Scout as they make their way through their various misadventures in love and life.

Look for Grease Bats at your local comic shop or favorite bookstore in July 2019.
