I’m far from the biggest sports fan, but I absolutely love sports movies, books, and TV shows. This is why I’m pumped for The Avant-Guards, coming in January from Boom! Studios. The twelve issue series, written by Carly Usdin and illustrated by Noah Hayes, follows an unlikely basketball team.
The Avant-Guards centers on Olivia “Liv” Bates, a student at the Georgia O’Keeffe College of Arts and Subtle Dramatics as she tries to start the first basketball league ever for art colleges. You might have guessed from the name of her school that it’s not really known for team sports. She manages to get all the missing pieces except for the final member of her team. That’s where the new student, Charlie Bravo comes in.
Charlie is a recent transfer who has decided to leave her glory days as a basketball star behind for some unknown reason. Liv must convince a reluctant Charlie to get back on the court with her ragtag team so she can realize her dream.
Shannon Watter, Senior Editor, Boom! Studios says:
Carly draws on her own love of playing ball to perfectly encapsulate the excitement and tension of bringing together the two worlds of art and sports on the basketball court while Noah’s dynamic designs have us falling in love with each of the misfit members of The Avant-Guards. We can’t wait for fans to discover the romance, rivalry, and drama at the heart of this team of unlikely sports stars thrown together by friendship and a passion for the game.
The Avant-Guards will be published under Boom!’ Studios’ Boom! Box imprint alongside titles like Lumberjanes, Giant Days, and Misfit City. The first issue will feature a main cover by Hayes and a variant cover by Veronica Fish.
