For the past five years, the weekend after The Game Awards is all about Sony’s Playstation Experience, a weekend long convention that starts with a keynote press conference where Sony unveils both their own new games and third party announcements about things coming to their platform. With Sony stepping down this year, Kinda Funny Games’ Greg Miller and his crew decided to step up, to keep that sweet, sweet hype high maintained for just a few days more, with the Kinda Funny Games Showcase.
Though this is the first time the group has ever done anything quite like this, they managed to segue from game to game while giving each one just enough info to make them stand out from each other. The most notable reveals here came in the last titles–as Sega revealed the title of their upcoming open-world action game set in the Yakuza universe, Judgment, and that it would be receiving an English dub when it arrived next summer. Also, we learned the last episode of The Walking Dead: The Final Season would be releasing January 25th, 2019, thanks to the people at Skybound Games, who managed to reassemble much of the Telltale team in order to give fans the closure on this side story set in the popular zombie universe.
The vast majority of these games were independent titles done by teams of less than a dozen (or sometimes only one or two people), but they offer a valuable flipside to the extra polished, blockbuster AAA side of gaming we’ve become so accustomed to at E3. Which of these titles excited you the most?
