Chris Messina In Talks To Join Birds Of Prey

The Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Miss Harley Quinn) rogues gallery will expand by at least one more character: Victor Zsasz.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Messina is in talks to join the film as the tally-marked serial killer. Created by Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle in Batman: Shadow of the Bat #1, the character used his incarceration at Arkham Asylum as the perfect cover to commit his crimes. Restrained during the day for treatment, he would escape at night via a secret passage in his cell. To determine Zsasz’s guilt in a string of murders, Batman went undercover in the Asylum only to learn Zsasz had brainwashed the chief psychologist, Jeremiah Arkham, into doing his bidding. Much later, Zsasz revealed himself as a former businessman who lost his fortune due to gambling. While contemplating suicide, he killed a transient man and discover the appeal of nihilism. He continues to kill — and add those victims to his tallied body — as a means of “liberating” people from the meaningless of existence.

The character will presumably loan out his services to Ewan McGregor’s Black Mask as Zsasz has become known as a hired goon thanks to his role on Gotham.

The film itself will see Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) teaming up with Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) to face off against Black Mask, but is it possible the character is a cover for the Joker’s presence in the film. Black Mask was part of a Mistah J bait-and-switch in the Batman: Arkham Origins video game. The marketing campaign and early parts of the story heavily suggested Black Mask was Batman’s ultimate nemesis in the story, only for the Joker to appear halfway through and steal Black Mask’s thunder. Considering the fantabulous subtitle of Birds of Prey, we’re inclined to believe the Joker may show up at some point.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Miss Harley Quinn) opens February 7th, 2020.
