Brian Stapf Signs Up To Become Wildcat On DC Universe’s Stargirl

Just this morning, we were speculating about Justice Society of America member Wildcat’s TV prospects and just a few hours later, we learn he is a definite member of the Stargirl version of the team.

TVInsider reports actor Brian Stapf will portray Ted Grant on the upcoming DC Universe series. The character, created by Bill Finger and Irwin Hansen, debuted in 1942’s Sensation Comics #1. A heavyweight boxer framed for a series of murders he did not commit, Ted became Wildcat to clear his name. After doing so, he remained a costumed mystery man and eventually joined the the JSA. Though his legs were crushed in Crisis on Infinite Earths, he was eventually given a magical set of nine lives which restored his mobility and decelerated his aging.

In the Stargirl series, Stapf’s Wildcat will retain his boxer origins, but it remains to be seen if he has his nine lives. Considering executive producer Geoff Johns’ use of the character during his run on the JSA and Justice Society of America comic books, one imagines Ted will be called upon to train lead character Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) in the fine art of smacking down bad guys. He joins Joel McHale’s hybrid Starman and Lou Ferrigno Jr’s Hourman as representatives of the Golden Age JSA which, reportedly, will inspire Courtney to start a society of her own.

Stargirl debuts on DC Universe next year.
