Now, I’ve got something of a knack when it comes to finding comic shop abroad when on holiday. I don’t know what it is, but I always seem to stumble on them one way or another. And, so it was when I walked into Europe’s oldest comic shop, Lambiek in Amsterdam. Well, I say ‘walked’. It was more like floating in, admittedly somewhat the worse for wear, but still functioning. They were moving and still found time to offer me a fresh coffee and a good old chat. I now make it my mission to go there whenever I’m in Amsterdam. We’ve featured them on here only recently when they re preparing for their 50th anniversary back in November.
But, you may not know that Lambiek have also been running an online encyclopaedia dedicated to recording, chronicling and updating its readers on comic book artists from all around the world and from various different types of comics and comic strips. Its been up and running since 1999 and easy to follow too. Making it 20 years old this year!
It’s constantly being updated, with an easy-to-navigate website that anyone could master in moments. A recent addition, for example, is Tom Wood, an American artist working for Disney Publicity Art Department from 1932 to 1940 who did a lot of publicity art for Disney. This should show you the scope of the project and the attempt to cover as much ground as possible It really is a passion project for both Kees Kousemaker, it’s originator, and current editor, Bas Schuddeboom.
It’s a very comprehensive guide and well worth checking out too, given the amount of work that has gone into it over these past twenty years! Now that’s dedication for you.
