She may not be a Legionnaire, but Nia Nal (Nicole Maines) is ready to become a hero as The CW debuts this first look photo of the character in her Dreamer costume.
The character — loosely based on the Legion of Superheroes’ Dream Girl created by Edmond Hamilton and John Forte — has always been on a heroic trajectory since she was first announced. In this Sunday’s episode, Brainiac 5 (Jesse Rath) will suggest she become a “superfriend.” A trailer for the series return released earlier this week also teased the costume.
Nia will become Dreamer, television’s first transgender superhero, on the Feburary 7th episode, “Menagerie.” The January 27th episode, “Blood Memory,” will offer the secret origin of her powers and introduce her family, which includes her mother Isabel (Kate Burton) and sister Maeve (Hannah James). All three are from Naltor, which will be familiar to Legion fans as the home planet of Dream Girl. On that world, 1000 years from now, the citizens all enjoy precognitive abilities. But on Supergirl, that power is a little more selective.
Considering Brainy’s apparent familiarity with Dream Girl, his attempt to turn Nia into a hero may have an effect in both time zones.
Supergirl returns Sunday on the CW.
