While it was always a given that Jennifer Pierce (China Anne McClain) would eventually become Lightning, the circumstances behind it are somewhat surprising. A tragedy has occurred and it motivates her to seek revenge on one Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” James III). And as this preview for next week’s show indicates, it will be up to the rest of Jennifer’s family to talk her down. But is she really wrong?
Also, it is sort of amazing to see Khalil (Jordan Calloway) fridged in what seems to be a conscious choice on the part of the show’s writers. To be fair, Khalil’s final day was orchestrated in a very thoughtful, touching way. In fact, both McClain and Calloway played the material to the hilt. But seeing that his death motivates Jen to take on a costumed identity is the textbook definition of a fridging. It will be interesting to see if the show follows through on the set-up and makes some sort of commentary.
Kind of like that reference to Markovia. Could that fictional Eastern European country be the real ultimate source of Freeland’s problems?
Black Lighting airs Mondays on The CW.
