Hard Case Crime To Collect Ms. Tree By Collins And Beatty

by Oliver MacNamee

The 80’s saw a boom in independent comic book publishers and a chance for creators to move away from the usual capes and cowls content dominating American comics. From this era came private detective, Ms. Tree, created by Max Allan Collins and Ted Beatty. Originally published by Eclipse in 1981, Ms Tree would send the next decade and more published by a number of different comic book publishers, including DC Comics.

Now it’s Titan Comics’ turn. Or rather their crime comics imprint, Hard Case Crime.

Inspired by Mike Hammer’s assistant Velda – as written by Max’s friend and mentor Mickey Spillane – Michael Tree (don’t call her Michelle) is a six-foot-tall, gun-toting, take-no-prisoners private eye determined to bring her husband’s killers to justice. Along the way, she deals with organized crime, double-dealing and deadly violence, while wrestling with her own personal demons. This series has been notable for its focus on real-life issues – homophobia, abortion, mental health – and Hard Case Crime is delighted to introduce her story to new readers.

While the press release is short on which comics are actually being collected, and releasing a cover image that isn’t the final image, your guess is as good as mine, but one has to assume it’s her earlier appearance from Eclipse and other publishers. If we do hear more, we’ll let you know.
