Once And Future Announced By Gillen, Mora And Boom! Studios

by Oliver MacNamee

It’s never been a better time to be an avid King Arthur fanatic and comic book readers with the news that Kieron Gillen (Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt) and Dan Mora (Klaus) are revisiting this legend in their new Boom! series, Once and Future announced at last week’s ComicPro event.

Described as a series that will explore “the mysteries of past, the complicated truths of our history and the power of family to save the day…especially if that family has secret bunkers of ancient weapons and decades of experience hunting the greatest monsters in Britain’s history,” I’m already looking forward to it and am fascinated by what Gillen will weave from this ancient British legend alongside Mora on art, who has proven in Klaus that he’s a master at the fantastic and magical.

Here’s more on this intriguing series:

When a group of Nationalists use an ancient artifact to bring a villain from Arthurian myth back from the dead to gain power, ex-monster hunter Bridgette McGuire pulls her unsuspecting grandson Duncan, a museum curator, into a world of magic and mysticism to defeat a legendary threat. Now the two must navigate the complicated history of the McGuire family and combat the deadly secrets of England’s past that threaten its very future.

The rise of the Right in both Britain and America is fertile ground for tackling in any media, and with King Arthur being such an iconic image of Great Britain’s mythical past, I can see how such a potent figure could well be appropriated by such hate mongers. But, reading Gillen’s statement, it’s a series that’s also looking to overhaul the whole Indiana Jones archetype he’s already listed in Darth Vader and Doctor Aphra for Marvel.

I’ve been chewing over how the classic explorer adventure serial could operate in the twenty-first century for a while. Doctor Aphra transplanting the genre to space was one conclusion. Once and Future is another, taking a genre whose core has barely changed since the 19th century, and updating it for the now,” said writer Kieron Gillen. “Adventure, romance, supernatural horror and too much bloody research, as always. When BOOM! Studios told me one of the most talented action artists of his generation was interested in collaborating, I knew that we had all the ingredients we needed to create gold. Gold which, inevitably, our heroes will steal.”

Its out in August and I can’t wait! Bring on the summer and the once and future king, and more action, more adventure and more dread.
