The Avant-Guards, a new 12-issue mini-series from Boom! Studios has been an absolute joy to read for its first two issues. The publisher has shared an early preview of issue #3, due out later this month. Written by Carly Usdin and illustrated by Noah Hayes, The Avant-Guards follows a group of friends who create the first ever basketball team at their historic women’s art college.
Issue #3 picks up after they’ve finally got enough players to qualify as a team with the addition of the new transfer student / former basketball star, Charlie Bravo. That doesn’t mean that they’re ready to compete though. As they get ready for their first game, Liv and Charlie have to scramble to train their fellow art school misfits to face their first opponents of the seasons…The Cuddly Retrievers of the American Institute of Veterinary Curiosities.
Shannon Watters, Senior Editor at Boom! Studios says:
Every person on the Avant-Guards is unique and brings a different skill or perspective to the team but in the end, they’re all there for the same reasons: to play basketball and make friends. Carly and Noah do a fantastic job of capturing all the fun, frustration, and drama of a group of very different people learning to become a team in order to tackle whatever situations might arise together.
The Avant-Guards #3 features a main cover by Hayes and a variant cover by Cara McGee. It’s published under Boom! Studios’ Boom! Box imprint. Look for it at your local comic shop on March 27th, 2019.
