Dark Horse Comics has partnered with Critical Role for three new projects coming later this year. Based on tales from the world of Exandria, these comics and art books allow fans to explore this universe in brand new ways. Critical Role is the most popular digital tabletop game in the world, housed by veteran voice actor and Game Master Matthew Mercer. In addition to Mercer, the cast includes Travis Willingham, Marisha Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Sam Riegel, Liam O’Brien, and Laura Bailey.
The new projects begin in July with the release of Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins Series II #1. This follows the unlikely heroes of Vox Machina in an action-packed yet absurdly entertaining adventure. This six-issue series will be available through Dark Horse Digital and retail stories, digging into the origin stories of the characters with material that’s been hinted at, but not fully disclosed in the live-stream.
Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins Series II is written by Jody Houser and illustrated by Olivia Samson. MSASSYK is on board for colors and Ariana Maher will be handling letters. The first issue will feature a cover by Fiona Staples. It’s set for release on July 10th, 2019.
Additionally, Dark Horse and Critical Role will collect the first series of Vox Machina Origins in a trade paperback in October. Writers Matthew Mercer and Matthew Colville join forces with artist Olivia Samson and colorist and letterer Chris Northrop to show how Vox Machina first met. This series was originally released through Dark Horse Digital.
Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins Series I will feature a cover by Stjepan Sejic. It clocks in at 168 pages and will retail for $19.99.
Finally, in late 2019, we’ll see the release of Critical Role: The Chronicles of Exandria – The Mighty Nein. This hardcover art collection includes materials presented chronologically from the first few story arcs of the Mighty Nein campaign. It features a wide variety of illustrations from the Critical Role fan community with commentary by cast members Liam O’Brien and Taliesan Jaffe and art direction from Lauryn Ipsum. The book comes in at 200 pages and will feature a cover by Matteo Scalera and Moreno Dinisio. It will retail for $39.99.
