Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) is in a heap of trouble. Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) is on the loose and bringing all of his plan to fruition. But as he gets ready to let lose Red Daughter (also Benoist), Kara and Alex (Chyler Leigh) set their sights on Miss Teschmacher (Andrea Brooks) in the hopes she can lead them to the big man himself. Unfortunately, it looks as though Lex will pull the old switcheroo and use Red Daughter to frame Kara. And as this preview for next week’s show indicates, it will be a bad news day for Kara.
Meanwhile, Lex has proved to be a breath of fresh air for the show. I almost wish the Lex and Red Daughter had been featured throughout the season. But then, perhaps, they wouldn’t be so effective now. As it happens, all of National City’s troubles has been his doing from the start. Lockwood (Sam Witwer) was his patsy all along and the Sons of Liberty a set of paper dragons he can defuse. It’s the classic Luthor playbook, but the existence of the Black K Supergirl gives him an ace he never would have dreamed of.
And now that we’ve had two weeks with him, it shows what can happen when the series builds to a strong, unambiguous villain played by a consummate actor. This is the sort of opponent Kara has deserved for years.
Supergirl airs Sundays on The CW.
