Samurai Shodown Appears At PAX East With A Release Date

by Sage Ashford

Leading up to it’s appearance at PAX East, SNK has released a trailer of their Samurai Shodown reboot. The trailer shows off several of the game’s roster of sixteen characters, including Haohmaru, Nakoruru, Charlotte, and more.  (There’s also multiple snippets of gameplay available on YouTube.) Though described as a reboot, the game is meant to take place between the original game and Samurai Shodown V, taking advantage of the Unreal Engine to bring us a beautiful world with dangerous weapons-focused battles. SNK is bringing back a number of systems made popular in the original games, including Rage Gauges and Rage Explosions, as well as a new system of one-chance special moves.

Most interesting however is the game’s new Dojo system, which can mimic a player’s fighting patterns. This allows a player to fight against themselves or against clones of other players in order to sharpen their skills. Samurai Shodown will be stacked with modes, including a Story mode, Practice, and a general offline Battle in addition to online gameplay. Samurai Shodown is scheduled to release in June for the PS4 and Xbox One, but the Nintendo Switch will have to wait until the fourth quarter of the year, while the PC doesn’t seem to have a date at all yet.
