As we mentioned earlier today, the end of Game of Thrones is only two months away. And while the six-episode season will contain a number of feature-length episodes, it may still prove too brief a season for some fans. HBO has recognized this and announced a quasi-extension of the series with Game of Thrones: The Last Watch, which will air one week after the series finale.
This two-hour documentary by Jeanie Finlay will take a closer look at the creation of the eighth and final season; delving deep into “the mud and blood to reveal the tears and triumphs involved in the challenge of bringing the fantasy world of Westeros to life in the very real studios, fields and car-parks of Northern Ireland.” It will also feature an “up-close and personal report from the trenches of production, following the crew and the cast as they contend with extreme weather, punishing deadlines and an ever-excited fandom hungry for spoilers.” That last challenge may have been the toughest of all with a whole host of wildlings trying to discover how it all ends before it actually all ends.
We’re still convinced it ends in ice and the Night King sitting the Iron Throne. But we have a hankering for doom and gloom in our high fantasies.
Game of Thrones: The Last Watch airs May 26th on HBO and on the various HBO apps.
