Was Julie Andrews Supposed To Be In Mary Poppins Returns?

by Christine Marie Attardo

I finally got around to watching Mary Poppins Returns this past weekend. I was anxiously awaiting the blu-ray release and couldn’t wait to dive into the whimsical world. The Disney movie which stars, Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda, has been a hit since theaters.

[**WARNING: MILD SPOILERS FOR MARY POPPINS RETURNS BELOW!]

All in all, I think that Emily Blunt does a wonderful job encompassing everything that the character of Mary Poppins has to be. I enjoyed the music, I enjoyed her spunky personality, and I thoroughly enjoyed the heartfelt story behind it all. However, I found myself waiting for a Julie Andrews cameo, even though I went into it knowing that there wasn’t going to be one. Andrews had voiced her opinion upon the movies release. She didn’t want to steal the limelight from Emily.

Still, I knew that there might be a moment where I would think, “Yep, that’s where Julie was supposed to be.” Sure enough, I felt that way. Now, don’t get me wrong, I absolutely adore Angela Lansbury. I find her to be a fantastic singer and well, I’m obsessed with Mrs. Potts. She sings a song at the end of the movie that is quite lovely and shares a nice moment with Mary Poppins…

…a moment that I believe was 100% made for Julie Andrews. My thought process is, when they asked Julie, and she said no…they went with the next best thing. I think that’s fair, don’t you?
