Portland’s Books With Pictures Runs Community-Focused Moving Campaign

by Hannah Means Shannon

We hope you’ve been hearing about this already, but the critically acclaimed comic shop Books with Pictures, owned and operated by Katie Proctor aka Katie Pryde, has been running a campaign to help the shop move to a more sustainable and community-friendly location not far from where they first opened shop.

Katie Proctor is already well known for organizing events at the shop that prioritize “inclusivity and diverse representation” and the new location, painted a breathtaking blue, will be contributing to that, too.

Proctor says:

We want to be the shop where we can say YES! to anyone who walks in and asks ‘Do you have any stories with someone who’s like me?’ Our staff listens closely to each customer’s interests and curiosities to help open new doors.

The historic building in SE Portland will house the shop and also be a home to Proctor and her two children on the upper level. The building will be large enough to host events and even has room for a food cart pod.

The Kickstarter running currently is helping cover the move, and you can find all the details here.  The campaign has less than two weeks to go and is already more than 70% funded, supported by Portland’s local comics community, which contributed rewards including artwork from Steve Lieber (Jimmy Olsen, The Fix, Superior Foes of Spider-Man), Erika Moen (Oh Joy Sex Toy), Nick Pitarra (S.H.I.E.L.D.: Infinity, The Manhattan Projects), Tyler Crook (Harrow County, B.P.R.D., Witchfinder), Michael Avon Oeming (Powers, Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye, Murder Incorporated), Ron Randall (Trekker, Sasquatch Detective), Cat Farris (My Boyfriend is a Bear, The Last Diplomat, Harrow County: Tales of Harrow County), Ron Chan (Plants vs. Zombies, Adventure Time), and more.

Take part in something really meaningful and help support this comic shop’s future, not to mention taking home so great rewards!
