Square-Enix has released a trailer showing the key characters of their new action RPG from Tokyo RPG Factory, Oninaki. The game follows Kagachi, a young man who is a Watcher, a group of people who watch after lost souls, helping them to deal with whatever ties are holding them to the world of the Living so they might reincarnate. In Oninaki, Kagachi meets Linne, a young girl with no memory of who she is, and the two begin traveling together. The trailer also introduces us to The Night Devil, a swordsman from a forgotten age who’s hunting Linne, along with Kushi and Mayura, two other Watchers with ties to Kagachi.
Oninaki represents a sharp turn from what we’ve traditionally become used to with Tokyo RPG Factory. It’s not turn-based, instead becoming an action RPG, and it doesn’t particularly hearken to the SNES and PS1 games the studio talked about when it was first established. If anything, it resembles a high-definition version of a 3DS title. After multiple attempts at aping games of old to mild success at most, it seems the studio is aiming to do more of its own thing this time around.
Oninaki is scheduled to release for the PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch sometime during the summer.
