Jim Carrey Stops New Sonic The Hedgehog Trailer Dead In Its Tracks

Paramount has released a trailer for the upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog. It features Jim Carrey reprising some of his old shtick in the guise of Dr. Robotnik. Watch below and see the spectacle of the one-time Riddler as he stops the trailer dead in its tracks to abuse a nigh-on heroic Neal McDonough.

Robotnik is called in to investigate a power outage in the Pacific northwest caused, presumably, by Sonic (Ben Schwartz). An SFPD detective (James Marsden) manages to track him down, and seemingly discover Sonic is an alien. The two must evade Robotnik, who believes Sonic’s power will allow him to conquer the world.

We mention all of this because the trailer is a stark contrast to Detective Pikachu. Both team a cartoon character with a flesh-and-blood person within hyper-real worlds, but there seems to be so much more passion on display in the Detective Pikachu previews that the weird soullessness of Sonic seems all the more apparent. Nonetheless, Marsden and McDonough should be praised for working opposite grotesque cartoons of once popular 1990s icons. That cannot be an easy thing to do.

Sonic the Hedgehog comes the theaters in November.
