Because Variety has its own lingo, we’re not entirely sure if Portuguese film and television actor Daniela Melchior is actually in negotiations to play Ratcatcher in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad or just the studio’s favored choice for the part. In the site’s word, she’s being “eyed” for the role and we’ll play it safe until more concrete terms like “in talks” or “confirmed” get bandied about.
Created by Alan Grant, John Wagner and Norm Breyfogle in 1985’s Detective Comics #585, Ratcatcher was Otis Flannegan, an actual Gotham City rat catcher who fell to a life of crime when he realized he could control the city’s vermin to do his bidding. Spending a lot of time in Blackgate prison, his powers proved useful as a means of smuggling notes and contraband in and out of the prison’s walls. The character made sporadic appearances in the following decades and died in Infinite Crisis only to be reborn in the New 52 continuity. Otis most recently appeared in the Young Animal series Mother Panic as a homeless former villain.
The Suicide Squad version of the character will reportedly have some link to Idris Elba’s mystery role. The actor initially signed on to play Deadshot, but the studio and actor agreed to set the part aside should Will Smith ever want to return. Besides Elba, the returning Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), the film will also feature David Dastmalchian as the Polka-Dot Man, and, reportedly the DC Comics characters Peacemaker, and King Shark. All will be press-ganged into a mission of vital national security interest by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis, who also returns).
The Suicide Squad comes to theaters on August 6th, 2021.
