Batwoman And Katy Keene Get Series Orders From The CW

Comic books reign supreme on The CW.

Deadline reports the network has picked up Batwoman and Katy Keene for the 2019-2020 broadcast television season. They also picked up a new version of Nancy Drew starring Kennedy McMann.

Batwoman stars Ruby Rose as Kate Kane, the cousin of Bruce Wayne who picks up the cape and cowl when he mysteriously leaves Gotham City. Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, she soars onto the streets as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence.  But in a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope. The character debuted in the 2018 Arrowverse crossover “Elseworlds” establishing her as a hero on the same Earth-1 as The Flash and Green Arrow. Presumably, she will appear again in this year’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover before her show debuts.

At the moment, we’re assuming Batwoman will take Arrow‘s place in the lineup after it ends its 8 year run this winter.

Katy Keene, meanwhile, stars Lucy Hale and Ashleigh Murray, who continues to play Riverdale‘s Josie McCoy on this new series. Both are recent arrivals in a magical version of New York populated with kindred-spirit starving artists, including mysterious socialite Pepper Smith (Julie Chan) and Broadway-bound performer Jorge Lopez – and his drag queen alter ego, Ginger (Jonny Beauchamp). All hope to find fame and they might be able to do it together. The Riverdale spinoff was initially pitched as a musical dramedy, but that term has fallen away in recent days. Perhaps the musical portion will be confined to Josie’s attempts at a singing career instead of full-fledged My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend style production numbers.

Both series are executive produced by Greg Berlanti, who continues to be the number one supplier of content for the network. Like Batwoman, we’re assuming Katy Keene will debut at the mid-season, but with Murray already leaving Riverdale to join the series, it is possible Katy Keene will arrive in the fall.
