As we’re been saying all year, Arrow‘s 2040 storyline has been the more exciting and interesting of the two ongoing plots. And as seen in this clip from tonight’s season finale, things escalate as the ersatz Team Arrow plots to take down the Archer mainframe. But Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) can’t stop herself from going into mom mode — even when one of her earlier overprotective mom actions turns out to be the key to saving the city.
It seems pretty obvious that we’ll lose Felicity in 2040 even as her 2019 self goes into hiding. This episode marks Rickards’ last as a series regular. We assume she’ll be back for the series finale or at least a part of “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” but it seems fitting that we would see her ultimate end tonight. It also rounds out the 2040 storyline should it happen.
But it leaves a question: will there be another 2040 story next season? It seems unlikely as the remaining ten episodes of Arrow will seemingly lead up to Oliver Queen’s (Stephen Amell) paying off whatever debt he accrued with The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) to ensure Barry (Grant Gustin) and Kara’s (Melissa Benoist) post-Crisis survival. Nevertheless, a 2040 story could revolve around something Oliver leaves for William (Ben Lewis) to discover about his ultimate sacrifice.
Arrow‘s season finale airs tonight on The CW.
