Nimona Animated Feature Film Scheduled for 2021

Nimona is a graphic novel by Noelle Stevenson (She-Ra and the Princess of Power) about a mischievous shape-shifter with a knack for villainy. The story inverts fantasy tropes by pitting the outlaws of Nimona and Lord Blackheart against the seemingly heroic Law Enforcers led by Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin.

The story is set for an animated feature film adaptation from Blue Sky Studios, which was recently acquired by the Disney corporation. Having read the graphic novel, I think that the fantasy setting and ambiguous morality will translate well into an animated film.

Stevenson’s experience with She-Ra could also help the story of Nimona translate smoothly from comic to animation. What excites me most is that this is another indie comic property that’s being adapted into an animation. So to that end, I wish Nimona success and I hope it opens to doors to more original animated content based on comics.

The Nimona movie is slated to release in 2021 and the graphic novel is available now.
