After what seems like an age of the Earth, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is finally making its Netflix debut this summer. As the streamer announced Tuesday morning, the series will launch on August 30th.
Directed by Louis Leterrier, the 10-episode series will feature the voices of Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nathalie Emmanuel, as Rian, Brea and Deet, three Gelfling heroes who discover the horrifying secret of the Skesis’ power. Thus, they set out on a journey to ignite a rebellion and save the world of Thra from the imperfection of the Dark Crystal. Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham Carter, Harris Dickinson, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Theo James, Toby Jones, Shazad Latif, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, and Alicia Vikander will play additional Gelfling characters. Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Ralph Ineson, Jason Isaacs, Keegan-Michael Key, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Simon Pegg, Andy Samberg voice the cruel Skesis and the benevolent Mystics. Donna Kimball will voice the beloved Aughra while Alice Dinnean, Louise Gold, Neil Sterenberg and Victor Yerrid provide additional voices.
But if the plot sounds a bit strange, the series is a prequel to the film. Which suggests Rian, Brea and Deet’s mission will ultimately fail as the Gelflings are all but extinct at the beginning of the film. Then again, maybe the series will be its own telling of the story with a very different ending. That wouldn’t be a bad thing as both the film and the series could stand as their own accounts of the same story. There’s a nice element of folklore to that. Meanwhile, as the above photo indicates, the series will look gorgeous.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance comes to Netflix on August 30th.
