Will there ever be a good Terminator sequel after Terminator 2: Judgement Day? Well, Paramount Pictures and a bevy of other production companies are going to try with this Fall’s Terminator: Dark Fate. Mackenzie Davis stars a Terminator — or is she an augmented human? — sent to protect the latest target of the time traveling machines. And as this trailer for the film reveals, she will have some help from Sarah Conner (Linda Hamilton), a woman who survive two ordeals with Terminators and prevented the rise of the machines in 1997. But is time itself determined to see the world ruled by computer consciousness?
Despite the talents of creator James Cameron as a producer and Deadpool‘s Tim Miller as a director, this still looks like just another Terminator sequel. And to be fair, making something as startling and revolutionary as T2 is more than you can ask of anybody. Existing sequels Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Terminator: Salvation and Terminator: Genisys proved just how difficult it is to work with the concept and make something satisfying.
All that said, Davis is a good actor and the notion of Sarah Connor returning to save someone else from termination is interesting. But if that will add up to a worthwhile Terminator sequel is still anyone’s guess.
Terminator: Dark Fate opens on November 1st.
