Combining practical sets, CGI animation, and good old-fashioned puppetry, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will take viewers into a world more closely resembling the vision of fantasy artist Brian Froud than ever realized before. At least, that’s our first impression from a new teaser Netflix released on Thursday.
Directed by Louis Leterrier, the 10-episode series will feature the voices of Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nathalie Emmanuel, as Rian, Brea and Deet, three Gelfling heroes who discover the horrifying secret of the Skesis’ power. Thus, they set out on a journey to ignite a rebellion and save the world of Thra from the imperfection of the Dark Crystal. Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham Carter, Harris Dickinson, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Theo James, Toby Jones, Shazad Latif, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, and Alicia Vikander will play additional Gelfling characters. Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Ralph Ineson, Jason Isaacs, Keegan-Michael Key, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Simon Pegg, Andy Samberg voice the cruel Skesis and the benevolent Mystics. Donna Kimball will voice the beloved Aughra while Alice Dinnean, Louise Gold, Neil Sterenberg and Victor Yerrid provide additional voices.
And, let’s face it, the results look amazing. Sure, there’s some obvious CGI in the trailer, but it more or less works in a world as fantastic as Thra. If one thing game me pause, it is the new voices for Aughra and the Skesis, which are just unavoidable realities 30-odd years after the original film. I imagine I’ll be come accustomed to the changes by the third episode if not sooner. Meanwhile, it is just amazing to think this thing is finally happening.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance comes to Netflix on August 30th.
