Marvel Comics has been pulling out all the stops for its 80th birthday. It’s not every day you become an octogenarian. Although the publisher has been celebrating all year, the big day is coming up on August 31st. That represents the 80th anniversary of the release of Marvel Comics #1. The first part of the big party comes with the below commemorative artwork from Adam Kubert.
Dan Buckley, President of Marvel Entertainment says:
Going back to Marvel’s inception in 1939, Marvel Comics #1 was the spark that led to the Marvel Universe we know today. As one of the most influential milestones in Marvel history, August 31 is the perfect day to officially honor Marvel’s birthday.
There’s a week of festivities and events at a number of retailers in store along with Marvel exhibitions and experiences including the release of Marvel Comics #1000, an oversized special edition one-shot featuring a slew of top-name creators from the past and present. Participating comic shops will be hosting Marvel birthday party events and will have free copies of a brand-new Marvel Universe Magazine featuring exclusive art and behind-the-scenes content from some upcoming releases.
C.B. Cebulski, Editor-in-Chief of Marvel adds:
For myself and almost every other comic book fan around the world, Marvel’s beloved comics and characters have been a part of our lives for as long as we can remember. But it all started with the Human Torch. As we salute Marvel’s 80th anniversary this year, we’re excited to celebrate Marvel’s official birthday!
I bristle when someone tries to extend their birthday to a weekend or week, but I’m willing to make an exception for Marvel Comics.
