Colton Haynes stay in Star City is, once again, short lived.
GreenArrowTV reports the Arrow actor will not be a season regular in the program’s eighth and final season. “We hope to have him back,” executive producer Beth Schwartz told the site during an interview over the weekend at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “We love him and he’s obviously one of the foundations of the show.”
Haynes’s status on the show has varied over the years. He debuted as a recurring guest character in its first season, but became a series regular during second season. He left at the end of the third — reportedly as part of the completion of his contract, but also amidst a number of changes in the actor’s personal life — only to return in a handful of episodes across the fifth and sixth seasons. He returned for season seven as a regular, portraying his version of Roy Harper in a Star City of 2040. But Roy’s story was not as developed in the flash-forward as one might expect for a season regular. He also appeared in the program’s present timeline, once again separated from Thea Queen (Willa Holland) to deal with the bloodthirsty side-effects of a dip in the last remaining Lazarus Pit on Earth-1.
As Arrow is slated for a ten-episode final season, there may be one last chance for Haynes and Roy to show up on the series. As it happens, former series regular Susanna Thompson will reprise her role as Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Thea’s mother Moira in the season premiere. Josh Segarra will also return as Prometheus. Of course, all those guest stars make us wonder if there is much of a Star City 2040 story to expect? Maybe the shift in storylines is the real reason Haynes left the series again.
Arrow returns October 15th on The CW.
