HBO has released a preview reel of series coming to the network though the Fall and into 2020. Both Watchmen and His Dark Materials feature prominently as they are the channel’s new forays into genre programing.
Based on the maxiseries by Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons and John Higgins, Watchmen takes place some 30 years after the events of the comic book. The world Adrian Veidt (Jeremy Irons) hoped to create was undone by Rorschach’s journal. And in its wake, a brutal America contends with a racist organization using Rorschach as their symbol and local police forces using masks to protect themselves. One such masked peace officer is Angela Abar (Regina King); whose life is so secret, she masquerades as a baker during the day. Meanwhile, a few of the older Minutemen are still kicking around, like Silk Specter — although she’s taken the name Blake (Jean Smart) and works for the FBI now. What any of this has to do with the return of Dr. Manhattan is anybody’s guess.
His Dark Materials, meanwhile, is based on the novel series by author Phillip Pullman in which Lyra (Dafne Keen) uncovers a conspiracy against her uncle (James McAvoy); which leads to an adventure across Great Britain and, eventually, reality itself.
We’re quite curious about both shows as HBO continues to dip further into genre territory. Sure, they’re looking for another Game of Thrones style success, but one imagines we’ll get a few sleeper hits along the way.
Both series debut on HBO this fall.
