“El Gato Negro” Adaptation May Become AppleTV+’s First Comic Book Show

If you watched last week’s Apple presentation, AppleTV+, the company’s upcoming streaming service, may feel a little light on genre offerings besides the Jason Momoa post-apocalyptic drama See. The content certain looks high quality, but maybe it needs a comic book show to round out the slate.

And it seems it may have one.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, El Gato Negro is coming to the service. In the Richard Dominguez comic book, first published in 1993, social worker Francisco “Pancho” Guerrero takes up his grandfather’s hero identity of “El Gato Negro” to push back against the forces of organized crime and costumed criminals in the South Texas region. Rock of Ages‘s Diego Boneta has been set to both star and executive produce the series alongside El Mariachi‘s Robert Rodriguez for sometime. As of this past February, Boneta had teamed up with MGM Television to find a home for the project and a suitable showrunner. THR claims a pitch from Supergirl writer Eric Carrasco helped get the series placed at AppleTV+, but it does not refer to the writer as having any official capacity. Perhaps the situation will become clearer once Apple adds the series to its schedule.

It may not be the most high profile comic book project for Apple to buy, but it at least proves the service will not consider certain sources “below” their standard, which is a genuinely good thing as it means comics not fitting the Disney or Warner Bros brands will still have one additional outlet to consider. Well, for at least as long as Apple is interested in operating a streaming video service.
