Star Wars Adventures: Return To Vader’s Castle #1 Is A Creepy Horror Adventure

by Tony Thornley

Last year, IDW Publishing brought us an eerie horror miniseries set firmly in a galaxy far, far away. We get to return to Mustafar again this year, with Star Wars Adventures: Return To Vader’s Castle #1.

Cover by Francavilla

Cavan Scott, Francesco Francavilla, Megan Levens, Charlie Kirkchoff and Andworld Design give us our first creepy tale.

Meet the caretaker of Vader’s castle, a cryptkeeper like figure delighting in the torture of others through horrific tales of the galaxy’s worst monsters. The first story he tells is of four unsuspecting treasure hunters, drawn to Lotho Minor by a promise of a haul beyond their wildest dreams. What they find though is a devil…

Scott and Francavilla’s introduction is one of the funnest things I’ve read in comics in a long time. They capture the spirit of the EC Comics that inspired the sequence, while balancing the Star Wars setting. It’s only four or so pages, but they’re delightful.

The horror story Scott and Levens tells is eerie and fun. Now this is an all ages book, so the story couldn’t go too dark, and too scary. However they still tell a tense and creepy story perfect for kids. It’s not too scary, but is just enough to give children chills while mom or dad reads it to them.

Scott builds great tension within the script, while Levens cartoony art depicts the devil- Darth Maul- as a grotesque leviathan, a great villain for a horror story. Kirkchoff’s colors are dark and moody, setting the tone for the horror. It’s not going to satisfy a hardcore horror fan, but it’s done just right for a family scary book.

This weekly event is off to a good start. Hopefully the poor Rebel the caretaker is torturing can make it for another four weeks, but we’re going to have fun keeping up with it.

Star Wars Adventures: Return To Vader’s Castle #1 is available now from IDW Publishing.
