Whether or not Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker turns out to be the conclusion people want from 40+ years of Skywalkers determining the fate of the galaxy, the note of finality is strong in the final trailer Disney released for the film. From the new material presented within, it seems the Resistance is poised to become a full-blown rebellion against the First Order even as Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) makes his play to restore his Empire. Are Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) truly part of his plan or will the Force’s need to balance everything snatch victory from him again? And if nothing else, Return of the Jedi will be a key Star Wars film to watch again in the next few weeks.
The amount of time the trailer spends in the bones of the Death Star — which appears to be the one from Return of the Jedi — suggests the key battle in the Galactic Civil War will loom large over the film. Director J.J. Abrams claims the film will offer a satisfying conclusion to all three mainline Star Wars trilogy, and using the remains of that Death Star sets the stage for … something. Whether or not it turns out satisfying depends on a number of factors, including your own appreciation of the Star Wars media past the Original Trilogy. But we expect that initial screening of The Rise of Skywalker will be something of an event.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker comes to theaters on December 20th.
