Marvel Celebrates The 40th Anniversary Of The Dark Phoenix Saga With Variant Cover Series

by James Ferguson

The Dark Phoenix Saga from writer Chris Claremont and artist John Byrne is easily one of the biggest X-Men events of all time.  We’ve seen it jump from comics to TV shows to movies.  It began forty years ago with Uncanny X-Men #128 and ran through Jean Grey’s corruption with limitless power in Uncanny X-Men #137Marvel Comics is honoring the storyline on its 40th anniversary with a series of variant covers running through the X-Men titles.  Check them out below:

  • X-MEN 5 DARK PHOENIX SAGA 40TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT by KRIS ANKA
  • EXCALIBUR 5 DARK PHOENIX SAGA 40TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT by PHILIP TAN
  • NEW MUTANTS 5 DARK PHOENIX SAGA 40TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT by JUAN JOSÉ RYP
  • X-FORCE 5 DARK PHOENIX SAGA 40TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT by RUSSELL DAUTERMAN
  • FALLEN ANGELS 5 DARK PHOENIX SAGA 40th ANNIVERSARY VARIANT by SCOTT WILLIAMS

More are on the way, along with other variant programs celebrating writer Chris Claremont’s 50th year of writing for Marvel.

  • MARAUDERS 5 DARK PHOENIX SAGA 40TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT
  • X-MEN 6 DARK PHOENIX SAGA 40TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT
  • EXCALIBUR 6 DARK PHOENIX SAGA 40TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT
  • MARAUDERS 6 DARK PHOENIX SAGA 40TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT
  • FALLEN ANGELS 6 DARK PHOENIX SAGA 40TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT
  • NEW MUTANTS 6 DARK PHOENIX SAGA 40TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT
  • X-FORCE 6 DARK PHOENIX SAGA 40TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT

I like the way this series of variants are handled.  They all involve the X-Men and they’re limited to the X-Men comics.  That’s a nice fit instead of throwing a cool cover on a book that has nothing to do with the image.
