Out last week from Dynamite, Vampirella #6 came with another amazing Stanley ‘Artgerm’ Lau cover. Over on social media, Lau has been sharing the various stages and techniques utilised in the creation of this cover. Norynally a digital artists, Lau made great use of charcoal in this to produce yet another sensational cover. Simply amazing work.
This is the charcoal drawing process for my latest Vampirella cover. The sketch was first done and approved digitally, then printed out and transferred onto the heavy Strathmore Bristol paper via a lightbox. I used charcoal powder, vine charcoal, charcoal sticks, charcoal pencils and charcoal powder mixed with acetone then applied with paint brushes to create some wet look effects. The total drawing time was about 10 hours. The size of the art is 19×24 inches. Hope you find the process useful although I’m still very new to this medium.
