Joker Nominated For 11 Academy Awards Including Best Picture

by Erik Amaya

It’s a good day to be the Joker.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Joker continues to find acclaim. Early Monday, the Todd Phillips-directed film racked up 11 Academy Awards nominations; including Best Picture, Best Director (Phillips) and Best Actor in a Leading Role (Joaquin Phoenix). Of course, the film has stiff competition from 1917Once Upon a Time in Holloywood, and Parasite — all of which have so far won the major awards at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards.

As we said before, the film struck us as an immaculate recreation of Warner Bros. crime films of the late 1970s, but that recreation was in the service of a very hollow story. The whole thing is, of course, anchored by Phoenix’s performance as Arthur Fleck, so his Best Actor wins so far are at least deserved.

In other genre nominations, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker managed a sound editing nod, one for Best Score, and another for Best Visual Effects alongside Avengers: Endgame. But other than that and Joker‘s various nominations, it is a another small year for genre at the Oscars. Here is the full list of Academy Award nominations:
