Mild Spoilers Ahead
Samuel is a would-be revolutionary video producer on the internet. He’s also a new student at his high school and has struggled to gain any friends. Samantha is a girl going to the same school who has struggled ever since an embarrassing event which has left her a pariah. Samir is another student at the same school who has friends but struggles to really be a part of their group, partially due to his giving chances to people who arguably don’t deserve them. On their walk to school, Samuel, Samantha, and Samir find a strange glowing pod which, after contact with it, allows these three former strangers to hear one another’s thoughts during the day.
Alienated #1 is a new sci-fi comic from creators Simon Spurrier, Chris Wildgoose, André May, and Jim Campbell. It focuses on a trio of disparate students who find themselves united by a strange alien item. They have usual problems: trouble fitting in, bullying, rumors, etc. They share a tormentor in Leon, a bigoted bully who works to make their days worse.
There’s plenty of charm in Alienated #1. Samuel, Samantha, and Samir (there is a joke about them being three Sams) each have distinct and endearing personalities. Samuel is a weird would-be revolutionary, Samantha is closed-off and trying to forget a painful past, and Samir is a charismatic young man trying to escape his own father issues.
Their shared psychic dialogue is entertaining and adds an interesting dynamic to the comic.
Chris Wildgoose’s artwork provides a grabbing and unique style. It suits the slice-of-life-meets-alien-incursion plot of the comic book. The characters each have a distinct look and are made to be aptly expressive. André May provides a well-balanced and atmospheric color palette, making the book look great.
Alienated #1 is an interesting start to a new series which immediately shows off plenty of personality. It focuses on a trio of teenagers existing on the outside of their school’s social scene and share a fair share of torment. They find themselves with a shared mind and must determine how to either fix this or cope with it. It’s a comic that earns a sturdy recommendation. Feel free to check it out.
Alienated #1 comes to us from writer Simon Spurrier, artist and cover artist Chris Wildgoose, color artist André May, letterer Jim Campbell, and variant cover artists Bengal; Jamie McKelvie; and Ozgur Yildirim.
