Netflix continues its long-in-development comic book-to-film slate with The Last Days of American Crime. Based on the series by Rick Remender and Greg Tocchini, it tells the tale of Graham Bricke (Edgar Ramírez), a career criminal who was never able to hit the big score. But when the U.S. government plans to broadcast a signal making it impossible for anyone to knowingly commit unlawful acts, he teams up with famous gangster progeny Kevin Cash (Michael C. Pitt), and black market hacker Shelby Dupree (Anna Brewster), to commit the heist of the century and the last crime in American history before the signal goes off. But as seen in the trailer above, pulling off the job may come at a cost greater than he realizes.
But isn’t that always the way?
To be honest, though, we’re not sure what to make of this. Director Olivier Megaton has never made a move we exactly like. From the Taken sequels and Columbiana, there’s always a mediocrity there. And that flat, generic feel is apparent in this trailer. Granted, it’s almost impossible for this sort of crime movie to look unique a short trailer. They tend to get cut down to the bad-ass dude, hot chick, and cool cars of it all. But considering Remender has been trying to get this made for so long that Sam Worthington was in talks to star in a television adaptation of it ten years ago, we hope for the best.
The Last Days of American Crime debuts June 5th on Netflix.
