Charlize Theron is immortal. Well, as true as that might be in real life, it is certainly the case in her upcoming Netflix film, The Old Guard. Based on the comic book by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez, her character has spent ages defending the planet while taking up arms for various factions across the centuries. And as this trailer reveals, it is time for a new immortal (Kiki Layne) to join the cause. But will their activities finally become the concern of a corporatized world desperate to obtain their immortality mojo?
The film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who helmed the absolutely stellar Cloak & Dagger pilot and was, at one time, set to make a film based on Spider-Man allies Black Cat and Silver Sable. The action here should give you some idea what a shame it is that Sony went in a different direction.
But that is Netflix’s gain, of course, as they continue to diversify their comic book adaptations with material like this. The plan also calls for a number of projects based on Millarworld comics, including an television series based on Jupiter’s Legacy due out later this year. Between that, The Old Guard, and the return of Umbrella Academy this summer, Netflix is looking to become a sort of streaming equivalent of Image.
The Old Guard debuts July 10th on Netflix.
