‘Hair Love’ Spinoff ‘Young Love’ To Become HBO Max Series

The impact of Matthew A. Cherry‘s Oscar-winning short Hair Love continues to be felt as HBO Max agrees to continue the story.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the WarnerMedia streaming service has commissioned Young Love, a 12-episode spinoff based on the short film. Cherry will run the show alongside The BoondocksCarl Jones as it tells the tale of Stephen, Angela, their daughter Zuri, and her pet cat Rocky. Zuri’s parents “juggle their careers, marriage, parenthood, social issues, and multi-generational dynamics all while striving to make a better life for themselves.” Additionally, the series will also “explore family dynamics through this young Black millennial family.”

“I am beyond excited to continue telling the story,” Cherry said in a statement. “Couldn’t ask for better partners in Sony Pictures Animation and HBO Max in helping us get Young Love out into the world.”

The original short was produced by Lion Forge’s animation division, Lion Forge Animation, and will remain in that capacity for the series. Despite animation becoming a more important part of the media landscape during the COVID-19 pandemic, production will still take sometime. HBO Max has not announced an airdate, so expect this closer to the end of 2021 at the earliest.
