Review: Nova Blasting Donuts To The Stars ‘Marvel Eat The Universe’

by James Ferguson

What does Spider-Man eat when he’s not web-slinging around New York City? What do the Guardians of the Galaxy chow down on when they’re traveling through the stars? Marvel Eat the Universe: The Official Cookbook from Insight Editions gives us an idea of that as Justin Warner takes us through themed recipes based on the characters in the Marvel Universe, from appetizers to main courses, to desserts, and more.

I had a chance to try out this cookbook first hand. I have to say, it was a bit intimidating at first. These can get a little fancy with some ingredients I have never heard of. There are quite a lot of recipes to choose from, however these were a little out of my wheelhouse, considering that’s mostly macaroni & cheese and tacos. I had to try something though, so I went for the donuts, the Nova Space-Cop Galaxy Doughnuts to be precise.
This also allowed me to bring my kids into the equation. I think they just wanted to eat donuts and frosting. That got them involved though. The recipe is really for the swirl-filled frosting, not the donuts themselves. Fortunately, due to my wife’s annual cookie baking around the holidays, we had all the ingredients except for the donuts.

The recipe was pretty easy to follow and it was only four steps. It claimed to have enough for six donuts, but we covered a dozen and still had a bunch of frosting left over. The donuts were covered in the frosting so it wasn’t like I skimped on it when coating them. My wife had the idea to use it on some cookies so it did not go to waste.
The swirls were a little more difficult as it required mixing different colored frosting together just right. If you mix it too much, you end up with a brown sludge. We were able to do this for a few with some nice results. They do look pretty cool. We kept some plain colors too.

This was a fun experience and really brings the heart of the Marvel Universe into the kitchen, wondering what the heroes and villains would eat on their off hours. There are a few more recipes I want to try out, although I’ll have to figure out where to get some of the ingredients as they’re probably in aisles I’ve never been in at the supermarket.
