Superman dismantling a super-power mafia was never going to be simple. Action Comics #1025 show just HOW “not simple” it is.
As this run begins to come to an close, loose ends are beginning to wrap up. But what that means is a lot more than what readers might expect. It comes to us from Brian Michael Bendis, John Romita Jr., Klaus Janson, Brad Anderson, and Dave Sharpe.
The Invisible Mafia is on the run, and the Super-Family is on the offensive. However, the Mafia still has a few tricks up their collective sleeves. It’s a battle that could claim the life of one of the Kents.
This issue is kind of a tough nut to crack. When it comes to everything dealing directly with the Kents, it really shines. The dynamic Bendis has created with Superman, Supergirl, Brainiac 5, and the Superboys is realistic, but it leans into their alien and superhuman natures in a way that makes it unique. They feel like a family who happen to be superheroes, and all the unique struggles that go with that, especially when extradimensional Parasites show up.
However, whenever the main antagonist of the arc, Marisol Leone, shows up, the story doesn’t just grind to a halt. It’s like a completed puzzle is thrown off the kitchen table and scatters into all 1000 pieces. These portions of the story are confusing and unclear, which is to the issue’s detriment especially when her involvement is supposed a Luthor-level threat.
This is probably the strongest issue that Romita and Janson have done since taking over Action Comics. There are still some problems- a lot of the faces are still weird, and many character poses are fully unnatural. However, the layouts are interesting, and the characters are extremely expressive. The splash pages are strong as well, giving us a great hook for many of the big moments of the issue.
I’m disappointed to see this run end in a few issues. Despite its weaknesses, it feels more like growing pains of two experienced pros trying to find their collaborative voice on the title, and not just them failing. I just hope the arc can finish on a strong note.
