Quintessa Swindell Joins ‘Black Adam’ As Cyclone

Black Adam‘s Justice Society is one step closer to forming.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Trinkets star Quintessa Swindell has joined the cast of the upcoming DC film as Cyclone, one of the members of the Justice Society of America teased by star Dwayne Johnson at last August’s DC FanDome event. The character, created by Geoff Johns and Dale Eagelsham (although based on an earlier idea by Mark Waid and Alex Ross), is Maxine Hunkel, the granddaughter of Golden Age hero Ma Hunkel — better known as the Red Tornado. Unlike her grandmother, Maxine has genuine metahuman powers and a desire to be the best hero she can be. Her cheery disposition is in stark contrast to the Cyclone glimpsed in Waid and Ross’s Kingdom Come, a member of a darker generation of so-called heroes.

Of course, it remains to be seen which version the movie will lean on. Considering Black Adam is the protagonist and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo) is a member of the JSA, their motives may be more clouded than the group seen on Stargirl. Swindell’s addition to the team leaves only Dr. Fate as the remaining JSAer as yet uncast. Aldis Hodge will play team leader Hawkman in the film while Sarah Shahi will appear as a unnamed character we presume will be a version of Adrianna Tomaz.

With a script by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani for director Jaume Collet-Serra, the film lost its release date in recent months as WarnerMedia makes its play to reshape the theatrical landscape and continues to postpone tentpole releases. Time will tell when and how you will be able to see Black Adam. Although, the continued casting suggests it is finally a priority project after ten-plus years of development.
