Chris Mason Joins ‘Riverdale’ In Recurring Role

Riverdale‘s future state is coming into focus.

Deadline reports Broadchurch vet Chris Mason will appear in a recurring role during the show’s fifth season as Chad Gekko, the “controlling and jealous husband” of Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes). According to the character description, Chad is “threatened by Veronica’s life in Riverdale, especially her friendship with Archie (KJ Apa).”

As previously reported, the show will wrap-up Season Four plot lines when it resumes in two weeks, but will then jump seven years into its own future starting February 5th. And much like Veronica marrying a Wall Street type, we expect the lives of the other Riverdale characters will be equally surprising — or unsurprising depending on your opinion of Veronica.

The change is, of course, something the program desperately needed. We stopped covering the program in detail last season as its plot seemed to circle the same ideas from previous years even while attempting to walk away from its thriller tendencies. It led to a lack of direction. Additionally, as the program featured high school aged characters, it ran the risk of a fifth season set in college; a risky proposition for most teen shows. Skipping nearly a decade allows for the characters to scatter for years before returning to the town with questionable spouses, relative successes, and new antagonists to show for themselves.

Riverdale returns January 20th on The CW.
