It appears Black Lightning will acknowledge its impending end.
As seen in the following trailer, Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) has doubts about continuing on as Black Lightning. Despite defeating the Markovian incursion last season, Freeland is still imperiled and he just wants to keep his family safe. Does it mean giving up the heroing thing for good? His superpowered daughters may feel differently.
It’ll be interesting to see where the show goes with this. The tension in Jefferson’s life has always been his desire to be a hero while also looking out for his family. It’s why he and Lynn (Christine Adams) break up all the time. But with the series coming to an end, the story can finally be decisive. As it happens, showrunner Salim Akil said early on that he envisioned the series running three seasons. Or, at least, it would take him three season to expose the reasons for Freeland’s inequities. Perhaps, like Jefferson, he now sees things cannot be easily solved just by exposing them and it requires more than a superhero to make any headway.
Frankly, we’re going to miss the heavy allegory the series uses to talk about things like the crack cocaine epidemic and the Tuskegee experiment. Black Lightning aims high in its superhero story and we hope it can land with a unique grace.
Black Lightning returns February 8th on The CW.
