Amazon Plans ‘Hellsing’ Adaptation With ‘John Wick’ Writer Derek Kolstad

It was only a matter of time before Amazon cracked open some Japanese manga and said, ‘Hey, we should do this!”

But the time has come as Deadline reports the streamer will adapt Hellsing into a feature for an American audience with John Wick‘s Derek Kolstad on scripting duties. The original manga by Kouta Hirano centers on Alucard, an agent of the Hellsing Organization, who helps the group protect the world from various supernatural ne’er-do-wells. The series also spends plenty of time on a new recruit by the name of Seras Victoria. Sending them into danger is Abraham Van Hellsing’s great-granddaughter, Integra, giving the series more of a tie back to the Bram Stoker legend. Although, Alucard is really just Dracula spelled backwards.

“Ever since my brother introduced me to the Hellsing manga and anime some years ago, I’ve been obsessed with adapting it,” Kolstad said in a statement. “And when Mike Callaghan and his team managed to secure the rights to then partner us up with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Amazon, I mean — damn, dude — this is a dream.”

Previously, the manga generated an anime and OVA series which no doubt aided in its popularity in the US, just as Kolstad himself suggests.

As with all new project announcements, it is unclear how quickly the Hellsing feature will arrive on Amazon, but we say give it as much as four years to emerge.
